Why did you choose Wild Magic Sorcerer for Pete?īeardsley: This is like my whole thing. I gotta roll this dice to see what's up with him." That was really cool. So throughout the season, sometimes Brennan would remember and ask me for it, and sometimes I would just know, "Oh, Pete - no one can hang out with him tonight. That dice came into play, because I sent Brennan a list of triggers that I think would have affected Pete, or would have made Pete want to self-obliterate into drug world. As he worked with his sponsor and continued to attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings, he would bump up to a d6, a d8, all the way up to a D20. So we came up with this really cool thing with these sensitivity consultants, but pretty much we use dice, and because Pete was in a bad place, he started with just a d4. We didn't want to do, "Roll a d20 to see if you relapse." We didn't want to gamify addiction or someone's addiction to chaos, or chaotic behavior. Brennan met some sensitivity consultants because we wanted to do this right. I really wanted to address addiction and recovery more specifically in some sort of way in the game, and I knew that in this season - I don't want to give away too many spoilers - Sweet-Boy Pete works in a bookstore and is trying to figure out what's next. Then we just go back to being like, "OK, he's this guy." I feel like we just put in that saucy opener as, "There's no question that this person is trans." We're telling you that right away, so we don't have to keep telling you this or showing off that we have a trans character. You don't have to keep coming back to him being like, here he is getting hate-crimed. Are you kidding me?" Then we absolutely did not talk about his transness ever again. Like, "We are opening on the main character as a trans guy in New York. I can imagine if I had just been like a viewer, I would have started foaming at the mouth. Like we're talking about top surgery, we're talking about medically transitioning. I think we did a really fun thing where the season opened and the hero character is extremely, obviously trans. Even if they weren't both voxes, I think they would still - they still have something there that's a really cool, deep friendship, but definitely watch that continue in the new season.

What do I do with that? How do I meet new people?" But he's still just like, "I am lonely all the time. It's strange, but in a way where you're watching Pete be happy for his friend, or try to be happy for him.

I think it's kind of like that thing where your friend gets in a relationship and they're not really around much anymore. He got back together with his sweetheart, and we saw all of that at the end of last season.

To start this season we come in on Kingston, who has a stable partner. How will that relationship be challenged or changed in Chapter 2?īeardsley: It's fun. Pete's principle relationship is with Kingston Brown, the Vox Populi. Let's do this." So we really explored just some darker themes, like what does it look like for someone whose whole thing has been the Fun Party Dealer? He didn't have seemingly any actual friends in the first season, except for these new people he met, who also sort of distrusted him, so I just wanted to actually explore that real life guy. So I was like, "Yo, Brennan, are you down to explore addiction with me in this season?" He was like, "For sure. I felt like the first season was like, "LOL this guy uses drugs as a crutch." Then when it comes to like actual America and my family, it's not cute or funny.

How much collaboration has there been between you, Brennan and the other cast members?īeardsley: I guess I'll start from the beginning. We did kinda like a "Sophomore Year" thing, but I will say I had a lot more fun bringing back Pete. This really goes to my conscious effort for this character. I sat down and said, "Where does this guy go now?" It was really fun to run all this stuff past Brennan, and he was like, "For sure, let's do it." CBR: Is this the first time you've reprised a character? What are you most excited about with your return to the character of Pete?Īlly Beardsley: We had done Fantasy High, and we had done some live shows and stuff like that.
